Understanding Gift Cards with Kasheesh: Authorization Holds and Best Practices

Edited

Authorization Holds and How They Affect Your Transactions

When using prepaid cards (including gift cards) with Kasheesh, it's important to understand how authorization holds work and how they might impact your payment experience.

What Are Authorization Holds?

An authorization hold is a temporary reserve of funds that a merchant or card issuer places on your card when you make a purchase. This hold ensures that you have sufficient funds to complete the transaction.

How Authorization Holds Affect Your Prepaid Cards

Important: Many prepaid and gift card issuers place authorization holds that are higher than your actual purchase amount. For example:

  • If you make a $30 purchase, the card issuer might place a temporary hold of $36-45

  • If you attempt to use the full balance of a $100 gift card, the issuer might place a hold of $120

These additional holds can cause transactions to decline with an "insufficient funds" message, even when you believe you have enough money on your card.

Why This Happens with Kasheesh

  • Kasheesh can only detect and process the base purchase amount (e.g., $30)

  • We cannot see or control the additional authorization holds placed by card issuers

  • When the total hold exceeds your card balance, the transaction will fail

Best Practices for Using Prepaid Cards with Kasheesh

To ensure smooth transactions when using prepaid cards with Kasheesh:

  1. Maintain a buffer - Keep extra funds on your prepaid card above your intended purchase amount (typically 15-20% more)

  2. Check your card's policies - Review the terms and conditions of your specific prepaid card to understand their authorization practices

  3. Contact your card issuer - Reach out to your prepaid card's customer service to learn about their specific authorization hold policies

  4. Don't use the full balance - Avoid attempting to use 100% of your prepaid card's balance in a single transaction

  5. Monitor your available balance - Check your available balance (not just the total balance) before making purchases
